Start with the learning job, not the product category
“AI study tool” can mean a quiz solver, flashcard system, note summarizer, writing assistant, tutoring interface, or browser extension. Those products solve different problems. A tool that is useful for checking one multiple-choice question may be a poor choice for learning a full unit or receiving feedback on an essay.
Define the job in one sentence before comparing products. Examples include:
- I need a second explanation for one calculus step.
- I need retrieval practice across twenty biology terms.
- I need to check whether my multiple-choice reasoning missed a condition.
- I need feedback that follows my instructor's rubric.
Use a focused solver for a focused question, flashcards for retrieval practice, a course source for authoritative definitions, and a tutor or instructor for sustained diagnosis. UNESCO's guidance on generative AI in education recommends a human-centred approach rather than treating generative AI as a substitute for human capacity or educational judgment.
Use a scorecard you can verify
Marketing pages tend to emphasize speed, model names, and large feature counts. Those signals do not establish whether a tool will help with your actual coursework. Score the parts you can observe.

Evidence labels matter too. The U.S. Department of Education's What Works Clearinghouse distinguishes recommendations by the quality of supporting research. Apply the same discipline to product claims: a testimonial, a vendor benchmark, an independent comparison, and a controlled study are not equivalent evidence.
Run a small, repeatable test
Do not judge a tool from its best example. Build a ten-question test set from material you are permitted to use:
- Include three straightforward questions where the expected answer is known.
- Include three multi-step questions where the reasoning matters.
- Include two ambiguous questions that require a stated assumption.
- Include two questions the tool may not support well, such as a diagram or course-specific convention.
- Record the answer, explanation quality, unsupported assumptions, time to a useful result, and whether verification was easy.

Inspect failure behavior
The strongest product signal may be how a tool behaves when it lacks context. Prefer a tool that asks for missing information, marks uncertainty, or states a limitation. Be cautious when it invents a source, silently changes the problem, or presents one interpretation as certain.
Test the same question after removing an important condition. If the answer stays equally confident, the tool may not be sensitive to the context that determines correctness.
Check privacy before convenience
For a browser extension, read the permission prompt rather than treating installation as a routine click. Google's Chrome extension permission guide explains that permissions can include access to page data, browsing activity, tabs, location, and copied text. Chrome also lets users control whether an extension receives site access on selection, on specific sites, or on all sites.

Match the tool to the consequence
Use faster, lighter verification for low-stakes practice. Raise the standard when an answer affects a graded submission, laboratory procedure, financial decision, health question, or other consequential outcome. In those cases, consult the course source or a qualified person rather than treating an AI response as authority.
